How Good Smile Company Pre-orders Actually Work (and Why Where You Order Changes the Rules)

The short version
Good Smile Company's own support pages explain the mechanics of placing a pre-order well enough, but not the part collectors actually need to decide with: where you pre-order the same figure changes when your card gets charged and how firm your cancellation deadline is. As of 2026-07-15, here is the comparison those pages don't spell out.
Where a Good Smile pre-order actually happens
Good Smile lists everything currently open for pre-order, and each item's deadline, on its "Online Dates" page — "the dates shown represent when the pre-order period for the item will end." Two different storefronts serve different regions: goodsmileus.com is the US-specific shop, while goodsmile.com's international ordering explicitly covers "all regions excluding Japan and Taiwan." You can also pre-order the same figure through authorized resellers like AmiAmi or HLJ — and doing so follows those shops' own rules, not Good Smile's.
Payment timing: the detail nobody spells out
This is the real decision point. On goodsmileus.com, its own Terms of Service spell out the policy directly: placing an order there means "you authorize us to charge your chosen payment provider for any such amounts upon placing your order" — charged up front, the same as buying anything in stock. On goodsmile.com (international, non-Japan/Taiwan orders), it works differently for most pre-orders: "On the same day the shipping date notification is sent, payment will be processed using your registered credit card or PayPal account" — so your card isn't charged until the figure is actually ready to ship, potentially a year or more after you order (Good Smile's own payments page carves out one exception: preorders above a certain price are charged at checkout there too, same as the US store). Order through AmiAmi or HLJ instead, and neither charges until your whole order is in stock and ready to ship either — a third timing model that happens to land close to goodsmile.com's. If you'd rather not tie up money for a long wait, the international store or an authorized reseller delays the charge; if you want the price locked in now, the US store's checkout-time charge does that instead.
Why the window closes, and what "release date" really means
Good Smile notes that the majority of what it sells is pre-order product, and that release dates "may be subject to change due to manufacturing circumstances" — a slip of a quarter or more is routine in this industry and gets announced by the manufacturer, not a sign anything has gone wrong. See our figure pre-order guide for why the window is usually the only chance at retail price at all.
Cancelling before you commit
On goodsmileus.com, pre-orders "can be canceled up until the product's pre-order window closes," from your account page or by emailing support; once the window closes, cancellations aren't accepted, with one narrow exception — if a shipment is directly hit by a new tariff surcharge, Good Smile gives advance notice and a chance to cancel before processing. That's a firmer, clearer cutoff than AmiAmi's case-by-case review, so if you're not certain you'll want the figure in a year, know the exact window-close date on the listing before you commit.
Which route should you actually use?
US-based and want the simplest checkout? goodsmileus.com. Outside the US, or would rather your card wasn't charged until the figure ships? The international GOODSMILE ONLINE SHOP. Ordering several figures from different lines or makers and want one consolidated invoice? AmiAmi or HLJ. None of these is objectively "better" — they're different trade-offs on timing and flexibility.

FAQ
- Where should I actually place a Good Smile pre-order?
- It depends on your priorities: goodsmileus.com if you're US-based and want simple checkout-time charging; the international GOODSMILE ONLINE SHOP (goodsmile.com) if you'd rather your card wasn't charged until the item ships; AmiAmi or HLJ if you want to consolidate with other shops' pre-orders on one invoice.
- When does Good Smile actually charge my card?
- It depends entirely on where you ordered: at checkout on goodsmileus.com, on the shipping-notification date on goodsmile.com's international store, or once your whole order is in stock and ready to ship if bought via AmiAmi or HLJ. Check the storefront's own policy page rather than assuming.
- Can I cancel a Good Smile pre-order if I change my mind?
- On goodsmileus.com, yes, up until that product's pre-order window closes; after that, cancellations aren't accepted except in narrow cases like a tariff surcharge directly affecting your order. Confirm the exact closing date on the product listing before you order.
